What is Social Anxiety?
Social anxiety is a condition where people feel intense fear or worry about being judged or criticized in social situations. They may fear embarrassing themselves, appearing awkward, or being negatively evaluated by others. This can lead to physical symptoms like sweating, a racing heart, or trembling, making social interactions feel overwhelming. The anxiety often causes people to avoid social events, which can lead to isolation. As they withdraw from social situations to avoid the discomfort, they miss opportunities to connect with others, which can deepen feelings of loneliness. The more they avoid social interactions, the harder it becomes to face them in the future, reinforcing the cycle of anxiety and withdrawal. Over time, this isolation can impact their sense of connection and well-being, further intensifying their fear of social situations. Treatment, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or medication, can help individuals manage their fears and build confidence in social situations.
